Description
‘Chapel Cottage’ is a really pretty fisherman’s cottage in the ancient and famous fishing village of Newlyn, just outside Penzance, West Cornwall. St Ives is 9 miles. Approx. 2 miles to the superb 2 miles of sandy beaches that stretch all the way from Penzance to Marazion. A semi-detached stone cottage with lots of character; exposed beams, feature fireplace, window seats. Just a four minutes stroll down to the harbour, village pubs, restaurants and cafes. Newlyn is a famous old fishing village with a working fishing harbour dating back to the 15th century, usually crowded with fishing boats; ranging from crabbers and long liners fishing for mackerell to fishing trawlers. Watch the fishermen unload their catch. Behind the harbour are a maze of pretty and colourful old fishermen’s cottages with small streets and alleyways, some retaining old Cornish language names such as Gwavas Quay and The Fradgan. Newlyn is of course the home of the 19th century Newlyn School of Artists (in Penzance a good selection of their work is shown in the Penlee Museum). Down by Newlyn’s harbour are some old pubs and eating places such as The Swordfish Inn and The Dolphin Inn. Enjoy a meal, with outdoor seating, overlooking the waterfront. Drop into The Duke Artists Gallery and Coffee Shop. A mile further on from Newlyn is the well known fishing village of Mousehole. Travelling the opposite direction, again about a mile, takes one into the bustling and extensive shopping streets of Penzance. Penzance is a thriving market town popular with visitors, with an excellent promenade, Regency houses and Georgian architecture. Penzance offers extensive shopping arcades, numerous cafes and quite a few tourist attractions; Maritime Museum, Penlee Art Gallery and Museum, Penzance Maritime Aquarium, etc. Not to be missed is St Michael’s Mount, a little over 1 mile down the coast, reached from a causeway leading from the beach at low tide. Small enclosed rear area.
